Retirees (and Aspiring Retirees!) SIG Meeting:

  • November 21 – Issues Facing Retirees – Speaker: Marie Ardito, Retirees United

You must pre-register here.

Marie Ardito, Information Coordinator for MA Retirees United and MASCA’s 2023 Special Award Recipient, is again joining our Retiree SIG to update us on state and national legislation initiatives that advocate for and support Retirees.  Whether you are retired or just dreaming of retirement, it is important to be informed and educated. There will be Q + A time during the session OR email your retirement questions to helenod@att.net with Retiree SIG in subject line.

As you prepare for our November meeting with Marie, we are proud to announce that MASCA’s Retiree SIG has taken a membership in Retirees United.  You will find newsletters and valuable information from this national advocacy group and Marie’s work for retirees on our new MASCA’s Retiree SIG webpage. TheRetirees United Summer 2024 newsletter is currently posted.  It is FULL of issues facing retirees and the huge legislative advocacy initiative for full repeal of WEP and GPO that reduces Social Security payments in MA!  Anyone deserving social security should read the newsletter and get active, since MA is one of just a few states that does not allow full social security payments or widow benefits if you have a teacher’s retirement pension. A recent retiree legislative success was raising the MA estate cap exclusion from $1 million to $2 million dollars!

Retiree SIG meetings welcome attendees to participate in discussions, ask technology questions, and suggest new topics and speakers.

Past programming has included sessions by a leader and advocate from Retirees United, an MTA Rep explaining How to Plan for Retirement, Sharing Travel Adventures, Blogging, Genealogy, and Technology Tips. Looking forward to “seeing” you at our next meeting.

During our Sept. 19 meeting, Staying Engaged Professionally and Socially in Retirement, attendees discussed the exciting work and adventures they are having in retirement: genealogy, consulting, teaching, traveling, or even a part time retirement job. We also began a discussion on AI and how it might relate to retirees.  Perhaps it will be a theme for a future meeting.

Save the Dates- Additional meetings this school year are scheduled for:

  • January 16 – Getting Started with Genealogy – Speaker: Jessy Wheeler, Genealogy Specialist, Boston Public Library
  • March 20 – Speaker TBA

If you have any questions about the Retiree SIG, please reach out to one or both of us.
