MyCAP: Are You Ready for Full Implementation for All Students?

This training equips school counselors with the knowledge and tools to create and implement MyCAP (Massachusetts’ Individual Career and Academic Plan) for every student.  Participants will explore the purpose and components of MyCAP, including academic goals, career exploration, skills development, and post-secondary planning, and learn how to tailor plans to meet each student’s unique strengths, interests, and aspirations. Through practical examples, hands-on exercises, and collaborative discussion, counselors will practice gathering student data, developing actionable goals, and using technology to track progress. Participants will leave with a physical action plan to implement MyCAPs across their student population, ensuring that every student has a meaningful roadmap for academic success and career readiness.

Objectives
By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  • 1. Explain the purpose and requirements of MyCAP and its role in supporting academic achievement, career readiness, and post-secondary planning for all of your students.
  • 2. Identify the key components of an effective MyCAP, including academic goals, career exploration, skills development, and social-emotional supports.
  • 3. Identify appropriate career exploration assessments to assist students in the development of their MyCAP
  • 4. Gather and analyze student data—such as interests, assessments, and academic records—to inform MyCAP development.
  • 5. Develop measurable and actionable academic and career goals aligned with students’ strengths, interests, and long-term aspirations.
    6. Integrate career awareness and post-secondary planning strategies into already existing curriculum opportunities across grade levels.
  • 7. Monitor, evaluate, and revise MyCAPs over time to reflect students’ evolving goals, strengths, and needs.
  • 8. Create an action plan for implementing MyCAPs consistently and appropriately within their school counseling program
