Career & College Exploration and Awareness in our Elementary and Middle Schools: Moving from Nice to Necessary

This engaging training empowers school counselors to reframe career and college exploration as an essential—not optional—part of a student's development in their elementary and middle grades. Participants will examine the critical role early career development plays in shaping students’ aspirations, identity, and long-term success.  Through interactive discussions and practical examples, counselors will explore developmentally appropriate strategies to integrate career and college awareness into their counseling programs, classrooms, and school culture. The session will highlight ways to expand students’ understanding of possibilities, challenge limiting beliefs, and ensure equitable access to post-secondary pathways. Participants will leave with ready-to-use strategies, tools, and an action plan to embed meaningful career and college exploration into their daily practice—making it a necessary and impactful component of student success.

Objectives
By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain the importance of early career and college awareness for elementary and middle school students and its impact on long-term academic and personal success.
  2. Identify developmentally appropriate strategies for introducing career and college exploration at the elementary and middle school levels.
  3. Recognize and address barriers that may limit equitable access to career and college awareness opportunities for students.
  4. Differentiate between “nice-to-have” and “necessary” approaches to career and college exploration within school counseling programs.
  5. Integrate career and college awareness into counseling lessons, classroom guidance, and school-wide initiatives using practical tools and activities.
  6. Collaborate with teachers, families, and community partners to create a supportive network that reinforces students’ exploration of future pathways.
  7. Develop an action plan to implement at least two new strategies for career and college awareness in their school or grade level.
