The Power of Partnership: How to Better Engage Families & Communities for Improved Student Success


This professional learning experience designed to help school counselors deepen meaningful connections beyond the school walls. Participants will examine barriers that may limit family and community involvement, particularly for historically underrepresented groups, and explore strategies to foster trust, communication, and shared responsibility. Through reflection, discussion, and real-world application, counselors will learn how to design inclusive engagement practices, leverage community resources, and create welcoming environments for all families. The session emphasizes practical tools, culturally responsive approaches, and collaborative problem-solving. Participants will leave with concrete strategies and an action plan to strengthen partnerships and improve outcomes for all students.

Objectives
By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain the impact of family and community engagement on student academic achievement, behavior, and overall well-being.
  2. Identify barriers to effective family and community engagement, including cultural, linguistic, socioeconomic, and systemic challenges.
  3. Apply culturally responsive communication strategies to build trust and strengthen relationships with diverse families.
  4. Analyze current engagement practices within their school or organization to identify strengths and areas for growth.
  5. Demonstrate effective communication techniques (e.g., active listening, asset-based language, two-way communication) through guided practice or role-play.
  6. Develop strategies to engage families as partners in student learning, including at-home supports and collaborative goal-setting.
  7. Identify community assets and resources that can support student success and strengthen school-community connections.
  8. Design an actionable plan to improve family and community engagement in their specific role or setting.
