Counseling the TikTok Generation: Connecting with Gen Z and Gen Alpha - JUST ADDED

Today’s students are growing up in a world shaped by constant connectivity, rapid social change, and evolving mental health needs—and traditional approaches don’t always land the same way. This training equips counselors with practical, relevant strategies to better understand and support Gen Z and Gen Alpha students.

Participants will explore how these generations think, communicate, and experience school, with attention to the impact of social media, identity development, anxiety, and shifting family and cultural dynamics. The session will focus on building authentic relationships, increasing student engagement, and adapting counseling techniques to be more responsive, inclusive, and effective.

Through real-world examples, discussion, and actionable tools, counselors will leave with concrete strategies they can immediately apply—whether in one-on-one sessions, group settings, or broader school initiatives—to foster trust, resilience, and meaningful connection with today’s students.

Objectives

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Identify key developmental, social, and emotional characteristics of Gen Z and Gen Alpha students, including the influence of technology, social media, and current cultural trends.
  • Describe how factors such as anxiety, identity exploration, and digital environments impact student behavior, communication, and help-seeking patterns.
  • Learn about relationship-building strategies that foster trust and engagement with Gen Z and Gen Alpha students in individual and group counseling settings.
  • Demonstrate effective communication techniques that align with students’ preferences, including validating language, culturally responsive practices, and developmentally appropriate approaches.
  • Adapt traditional counseling interventions to better meet the needs of digitally connected and diverse student populations.
  • Develop practical approaches for addressing common challenges (e.g., social media conflict, school avoidance, emotional regulation) with this generation.
  • Create an action plan to integrate new learning and strategies into their work with Gen Z and Alpha students.
